Earth Hour saved Lanka 130mw

The Ministry of Power and Energy says 130 mega watts of power was saved in Sri Lanka on Saturday when the country joined the world in the ‘Earth Hour’ event.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa also took part in the event which lasted for one hour from 8.30 to 9.30pm on Saturday.

The Ministry of Power and Energy said that Saturday’s saving showed that with commitment the public can save electricity.

Earth Hour engages hundreds of millions of people from all corners of the globe to take positive actions for the environment and celebrate their commitment with the people of the world by switching off their lights for one designated hour.

The aim of Earth Hour 2012 was to show the actions that people, businesses and governments world-wide are taking to reduce their environmental impact.  (Colombo Gazette)

  1. If Sri Lanka was able to save up to 130 mega watts of power by turning off power for just one hour during the annual earth hour event, imagine how much more power can be saved if this practice was to be done more often. While this would be a good initiative to conserve energy, Sri Lanka would lose a lot of money when power is turned off hence this remains to be a challenge.
