US refuses to postpone vote

US Ambassador to Geneva Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, rejected a call from Cuba to postpone the vote on the resolution on Sri Lanka when it was presented to the UN Human Rights Council a short while ago.

Ambassador to Geneva Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe said that the ?moderate? resolution urges Sri Lanka to take action on the recommendations of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

Cuba however said the submission of the resolution infringes on the sovereignty of another country and so urged the council to vote against it.

China also rejected the resolution and said it is an?interference in Sri Lanka’s efforts to promote reconciliation.

The EU meanwhile backed the resolution and also raised concerns over threats faced by civil society both in Colombo and Geneva during the UNHRC session.
