UNP files FR against cops, AG

The opposition United National Party (UNP) filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition against the police and the Attorney General (AG) today.

UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena and Akila Viraj filed the petition in court today which also cited the Inspector General of Police.

The UNP filed the FR against the decision by the police to use tear-gas and water cannons on a UNP protest staged in Fort recently.

The protest, which was against the fuel price hike, was dispersed by the police on the basis that the crowd was obstructing traffic.

However in the FR petition the UNP said it had every right to stage a peaceful protest but the police had violated that right.

UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena was injured in the incident.

Construction of LPG terminal at Hambantota Port completed

The Chinese company constructed liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) terminal in the Hambantota Port in the south of Sri Lanka has come to mechanical completion, the Xinhua news agency reported.
