Divas come alive at Silk

A group of young talented female singers took to the stage at DIVAS ‘LIVE’ at the Silk club in Colombo on March 10 and put on a performance which gripped the audience.

The concept behind DIVAS ‘LIVE’ was to show that in a male dominated music circuit, women can do even better….and better they did

The Artists who performed that night were :

Niamh Evans

This talented 14 year old has loved her music ever since she was a toddler and now is a ‘recognized’ singer, guitarist and a somewhat reluctant pianist. Trained by Sureka Amerasinghe, Niamh had an early introduction to jazz and for the past four years she went onto study under the guidance of Denham Pereira – Director Of Music “Voice of Praise” Choir, St Andrew’s Church and more; Very recently coming under the banner of “Music Matters” and Maxie Rosario.

Her short ‘career’ has included appearances at CR&FC Sunday Jazz, Hilton Hotel (Colombo), Cinnamon Lakeside (Colombo), Barefoot Gallery (Colombo), a charity concert at The British School,  and gigs on a resort island in Maldives.

Influenced by gifted artists from Generation Y, from Adele to Amy Winehouse, from Michael Buble to the all time greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gorme, Chaka Khan and Chet Baker.

Thilinee Silva

Pop, Rock And Soul. Three words to describe this young artist who’s rapidly making a name for herself in the local music scene! A past pupil of Good Shepherd’s Convent, Thilinee was voted through to the Top 12 of the YES SUPER STAR Competition 2009 and through that she gained national recognition with her soulful song “Something Right”, which was subsequently included in the YES SUPER STAR album released later that year. She has graced the stages of many national events, including the MJ Tribute Concerts of 2010 & 2011 and is a popular favorite whose unforgettable voice and memorable tones are sought after by music loving audiences throughout Colombo.

Shamistha De Silva

At 19 Shamistha is no stranger to the spotlight as she already is used to making waves in the music industry with her outstanding vocal performances, both at home and internationally, also as an award winning cellist. In the past she has collaborated with several renowned artists and bands such as The Rebels, Five Minutes Apart, Harsha Makalanda, Bathiya and Santush and has also performed with the Merry An Singers in Chennai. In 2009, she flaunted her amazing vocals by singing Alto in the Master Work “Verdi’s Requiem”, conducted by the internationally renowned conductor Gregory Rose, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka.

For most of her life she has been a dedicated member of her school choir, a conductor and leader since 2006; She is also a former member of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Sri Lanka since 2001 – heading the Cello Section since 2007 and frequent performer at Jazz Unlimited at CR & FC and Jazz Sundays at Loon Tao, (to name a few), all while managing straight As!

She currently takes on lead vocals in ‘String Theory’, a pop band which launched over two years ago and is also a member of a professional string quartet, which performs once a week at one of Colombo’s most prestigious hotels.

Schamali Jayaratne

Interesting fact – She discovered that she could sing when she was asked to join her school’s choir (Ladies College) under the guidance of Ms. Sureka Amerasinghe.

During school, she took part in numerous inter house solo singing competitions and that gave her the opportunity to be trained by esteemed singers like Rohan De Lanerolle (at workshops held prior to the competitions).

Currently, She is being trained by Ms.Peshali Yapa and is a chorister of her choir-Coro CantAmici and is currently the lead female vocalist of the band “The Castways”.
