Prison superintendent will remain

The Superintendent of the Welikada prison will not be replaced despite the protest by prisoners on Tuesday, the Minister in charge of Prisons Chandrasiri Gajadeera said.

He told The Sunday Leader that the prisoners were demanding the removal of the superintendent after he nabbed suspects attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison.

Some prisoners had been nabbed attempting smuggle heroin into the prison premises concealed inside lunch packets.

Inmates of the Welikada prison staged massive protest on Tuesday demanding the removal of the superintendent and the protest subsequently turned violent resulting in over 31 people being injured.

Files belonging to the prisoners were also destroyed when the protestors set fire to a building inside the prison.

They also pelted stones towards the baseline road disrupting the traffic.

Gajadeera said that over Rs. 6 million in dmages was caused as a result of the prison riot.
