Canada concerned over Maldives unrest

The High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Bruce Levy, has expressed concerns regarding recent developments and unrest in the Maldives.

In a statement released in Colombo, the High Commissioner said that while Canada recognizes the complexity of the democratic transition undertaken by the Government of Maldives, the respect for human rights, an independent judiciary, and rule of law must remain an utmost priority throughout this process.

He urged all parties to refrain from making derogatory or inflammatory public statements. The High Commissioner also called for a commitment from all parties to uphold the principle of freedom of expression in the spirit of pluralism and democratic values.
