Colombo Leadership Academy concludes successful workshop

CLA RiazIn an effort to provide better understanding and proactive growth in the business and human resources field, the Colombo Leadership Academy (CLA) recently presented a series of Business Strategy workshops with renowned emotional intelligence guru Archana Law. Tailored to provide better insights and the right tools to utilize emotional intelligence in the day to day interactions of the corporate world, the workshop was recognized by participants as an innovative and forward thinking step in the right direction for better management skills for sustainable performance.

Emotional Intelligence has been recognized as a vital management tool for many years. It hasn’t however, truly been a component that has been explored widely in the Sri Lankan context. Emotional Intelligence is the ability of an individual to deal successfully with other people, to manage oneself, motivate other people, understand one’s own feelings and appropriately respond to the everyday environment and create a culture of shared vision. The workshop brought to light many challenges and positive solutions that can be utilized in this context to achieve higher productivity and to reduce employee attrition.

Speaking on the importance of EQ in the corporate setting, Co-founder of CLA and Leadership Development & Transformation Specialist, Riaz Hassen said, “It is a parable that only smart, highly qualified and hardworking people can be successful at running a business enterprise. Emotional Intelligence reflects one’s ability to deal with daily challenges and it also includes internal skills necessary to manage and control oneself in various challenging situations. While intelligence is important to success, it is not the only attribute required to be successful in a highly competitive business landscape.  Recent research suggests that emotional intelligence, measured by emotional quotient (EQ), is a better predictor of “success” than the more traditional measures of cognitive intelligence (IQ). Embracing Emotional Intelligence in your leadership culture is not about being soft, emotional and nice. Comparatively, it is about being effective and propelling shared vision and using communication to work more effectively.”

The workshop on Emotional Intelligence broke the concept down into the main skills necessary to provide managers with a springboard to better understand and manage their workforce. Giving them the ability to achieve more efficient results and develop and retain their skilled workforce. Covering factors such as how to understand the emotional cues of employees and apply strategies to strengthen communication and efficiency through identifying personal strengths and limitations the workshop gave managers the necessary knowledge to enhance efficiency and achieve greater results.

Speaking on the areas covered in the program, the Director of a leading financial organization said, “A major factor that was focused on was a manager’s ability to acquire and apply the knowledge and skills to utilize emotional intelligence effectively in the workplace and create an inspired team. Traditionally we believed leaders must have a large follower bases, but the learning provided the insight that good leaders must produce great Leaders, that was a big take away for me personally.”

The workshop was conducted at the Kingsbury Hotel and was attended by over 50 business leaders and professionals from across a wide range of industries. CLA’s event partners are The Kingsbury, The Leadership Circle, Q & E Advertising, Limelight Public Relations, Direct Solutions, Metropolitan and MEC. Reservations will be taken on 0720 865 000 or 0720 865 001, inquiries@cmbleadershipacademy.com or by visiting www.cmbleadershipacademy.com.

Sunlight lights up Sri Lanka during Vesak

TextingInTheWishCountry’s first “Aaloka Pahan Poojawa” gives a unique opportunity to people across the nation to be a part of the Dalada Maligawa Aloka Pooja, on Vesak day.

Visiting the Dalada Maligawa during Vesak is a sacred ritual that all Buddhists in Sri Lanka seek to perform. This year, thanks to an innovative initiative by one of the country’s best loved brands – Sunlight, over 1.1Million people, who could not be present in Kandy in person, were able to participate in the Maligawa’s Aloka Pooja via the simple gesture of a missed mobile call that then utilized to light a digital pahana on their behalf on Vesak day.

Sunlight’s initiative used a very user friendly and completely free mechanism of a missed call to a special assigned number. Callers then received an SMS with a number corresponding to a digital pahana which was lit on their behalf during the Aloka Poojawa that adorned the Dalada Maligawa on Vesak Poya day.

Sunlight had a small window of opportunity in which to tell people about this remarkable project, but the response they received was truly unprecedented. Commenting on the inspiration behind the initiative Saumya Perera, Senior Brand Manager Sunlight said “Sunlight has worked with the Dalada Maligawa for the last four years to bring people the Pahan Pooja. This year our discussions revealed that while we were doing our utmost to cater to those who could visit this holy site during Vesak; there were countless others who could not be there in person. In looking for ways to include them, we evolved the idea of the Aloka Poojawa. We had just five days to get our message out but the response was immediate; with over 1.1million people using the missed call mechanism to become part of the program”.

“The massive response has been truly humbling” says Siddharth Banerjee, Marketing Director Unilever Sri Lanka “Over 1.1million missed calls ,which is roughly 5% of the nation’s population is not just a phenomenal number, but is also a true reflection of the goodness of the Sri Lankan people, which is the basis for our ongoing Sunlight Sooriya Yathra campaign. Sunlight has been the people’s brand for more than 125 years; and as such we are delighted to have been able to give so many people a chance to be a part of the sacred Aloka Pooja”.

The participants were given the opportunity to share their comments on the campaign via the Dalada maligawa official facebook page. The campaign was greeted with enthusiasm where ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ for the initiative increased exponentially on a daily basis. While some, like Sisira Rajapakse (who dedicated his pahana to a fallen fellow soldier), took the opportunity to bless someone they knew and cared for; others like Saman Liyanage commended the campaign, posting “Thank you for the opportunity given to us, Sunlight. May you do many more activities of this nature”.

Acknowledging the effort it took to take the initiative from dream to reality, Saumya said “I would like to thank the staff and management of the Dalada Maligawa for their support and cooperation, and the teams from Dialog, Lowe and Group M for their dedication and hard work .Most of all though, I want to thank the Sri Lankan people; their goodness is Sunlight’s inspiration.”

In addition to the Aloka Pooja, Sunlight also continued the various pooja across the country in celebration of the most sacred day in the Buddhist calender over the Vesak weekend.

‘April Blossoms 2015’ dazzles in N’Eliya with Lassana Flora patronage

PHOTO 01 - AWARDNuwara Eliya was a magnificent riot of colour last month when April Blossoms 2015 showcased the multi-faceted beauty and intricate skills of “floriculture” to the thousands of visitors who made their customary pilgrimage to this hill station.

Organised by the Nuwara Eliya Mayor His Worship Mahinda Dodampegamage and the members of Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, April Blossoms 2015 was co-ordinated by Chief Public Health Inspector D.B. Maussawa.

Minister of Sports and Tourism Hon. Naveen Dissanayake was the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony while the Chief Minister of the Central Province Hon. Sarath Ekanayake was Chief Guest at the awards award ceremony.

Acclaimed as Sri Lanka’s only European-type flower show which showcases upcountry flowers, “April Blossoms 2015”, attracted large numbers of floral experts, enthusiasts and foreign visitors to the Queen Victoria Park in Nuwara Eliya.

“We are delighted to have been the Principal Sponsor of this national event together with Hatton National Bank and the Tourist Board. Our presence here is two-fold. Not only does it give us a chance to actively encourage the growing of high quality flowers, but to also promote creative floral designing and gardening at a national level”, says Lassana Flora’s Managing Director Dr. Lasantha Malavige.

“Floriculture is a growing industry which is rapidly expanding both on a commercial scale and also as a lucrative hobby in one’s own backyard. Given the constant demand for fresh flowers, this industry is one that will always find markets both locally and even overseas. We are deeply committed to raising the bar of the industry we operate in. Over the years we have assisted small growers by sharing knowledge and sharpening their skills which benefit them economically”, he added.

April Blossoms 2015 also featured competitions for private and commercial growers who were rewarded for the quality of their many varieties of flowers. An important feature was the floral arrangement competition which saw a few hundred entries of creative floral work. The garden competition is the only such event of its kind in Sri Lanka. Both commercial and private gardens were carefully scrutinised by the judges who paid attention to many aspects such as foliage, flowers, hedges and lawns. The distinguished Panel of Judges was headed by top officials of the Department of National Botanical Gardens.

A few years ago Lassana Flora opened Sri Lanka’s first-ever Flower Collection Centre at the Nuwara Eliya Economic Centre thereby helping the hundreds of small-growers and suppliers in the Nuwara Eliya district to transport their flowers to distant locations such as Colombo. Through this main CSR project Lassana Flora shares knowledge and expertise with suppliers on how to fine tune and further improve their growing skills and get the best possible produce.

“As one of the leading players in Sri Lanka’s floral industry, we at Lassana Flora firmly believe that it is our corporate social responsibility to constantly take the concepts of quality and creativity in our floral industry to a higher level. Competitions of this nature will surely lift the bar and thus need support at all times. Given its resounding success this year, we’re confident that April Blossoms will soon become a major tourist attraction not only in Sri Lanka but also in this region”, Dr. Malavige concluded.
