STF Recovers Illegal Mobile Phones From Boossa Prison

The Police Special Task Force (STF) said yesterday (26) that more than 100 mobile phones have been recovered so far this year from inmates held at the Boossa High Security Prison, including several well-known underworld figures.

During a special search operation conducted over the past few days, STF officers uncovered mobile phones hidden inside prison cells occupied by inmates known as Loku Patty, Midigama Ruwan, and Dematagoda Chaminda. Police said some devices had been buried underground within the cells.

Investigations have revealed that certain inmates were allegedly continuing criminal activities from within the prison using the illegally obtained phones.

Senior Deputy Inspector General for the Southern Province Kithsiri Jayalath stated that despite repeated notifications to relevant authorities, efforts to curb the misuse of mobile phones inside the prison had not been effective.

Following instructions from STF Commanding Officer DIG Saman de Silva, special searches were carried out on December 22, 23, and 24 by STF personnel together with officers from the Emergency Response and Tactical Unit.

Police confirmed that a mobile phone was also found in the cell of Samindu Dilshan, identified as a suspect in the Ganemulla Sanjeewa murder. In addition, a smartphone, charger, and data cable were recovered from a pit about one and a half feet deep in the cell of underworld figure Amila Hirushlal, also known as Kurulla.

Authorities said that over an 84-day period, officers seized 159 SIM cards, 110 chargers, and an internet router. Investigators suspect that the contraband may have been smuggled into the prison with the assistance of corrupt officials.
