SJB insists it will not function under Ranil

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) says it has not agreed to any proposal to function under United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the head of a collective opposition.?

The UNP, SJB, and other opposition political parties had talks with Wickremesinghe on working together in local councils where the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) does not have absolute majority.

“The SJB did not agree to any proposal to function under Ranil Wickremesinghe as the head of a collective opposition. The SJB placed second in the last local government elections and has no intention of allowing another opposition party to lead the way,” SJB member Rehan Jayawickreme said on X.

The opposition is attempting to grab power in local councils where the NPP failed to win absolute majority at the recent Local Government elections.

The main focus of this attempt is in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) where the opposition has more seats than the NPP.

However, President Anura Kumara Disanayake warned that any attempt to obstruct the mandate given to the NPP by the public, will be met with stern action.
