The printing of Sri Lankan passports is to be expedited with operations to take place 24 hours a day using additional staff.

The Government said that a committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers had submitted recommendations on the actions to be taken to address the shortage of passports.

Accordingly, the procurement process had commenced to supply 1,100,000 empty passports with the ?P? category chip from the supplier.

A programme has now been proposed to issue 4000 passports per day by operating the Department of Emigration and Immigration 24 hours a day.

The Cabinet of Ministers have approved a proposal furnished by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs to supply the additional staff required for this purpose by engaging officers serving in the Department of Emigration and Immigration.

It has also been proposed to obtain the services of retired officers on contract basis with the concurrence of the Public Service Commission in addition to attaching the officers currently in government service with the consent of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Governments.
