New laws will be introduced to lift restrictions in Sri Lanka on sound amplification after 10 pm after tourists expressed outrage when the Police stopped a party in Weligama recently.

Foreign Affairs and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath said that the tourists and some locals were misinformed and assumed the crackdown was ordered by the new Government.

He said the Police were acting on laws that were in place for several years preventing sound amplification in certain locations after 10pm.

A video shared on social media showed the Police entering a venue where a party full of tourists was taken place and stopping the loud music.

Tourists who were outraged over the move blamed President Anura Kumara Disanayake saying he had enforced the new regulations. (Colombo Gazette)
