Former Minister Bandula Gunawardena quits politics

Former Minister Bandula Gunawardena has decided to quit politics and focus on making movies and higher education.

Gunawardena, who was the Cabinet Spokesman when Ranil Wickremesinghe was President, and had also served as the Minister of Transport and Mass Media, said that he had served the people to the best of his ability.

The former MP said that he will not be contesting the upcoming Parliament election.

Gunawardena had backed Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential election.

Wickremesinghe has already announced he will not be contesting the Parliament election and will also not enter Parliament through the National List. (Colombo Gazette)

Security beefed up at Sri Lankan refugee camp in India

Police have strengthened security at the Pooluvapatti Sri Lankan refugee camp in Coimbatore, India following a clash between members of the camp and a Hindu outfit on Saturday, The Hindu newspaper reported. Policemen arrested over shots fired at vehicle which killed youth

Two policemen have been arrested over an incident in the North last evening where shots were fired at a vehicle killing a youth. The two policemen were produced in court and remanded till July 24. The Police opened fire on the vehicle in Vadamarachchi East, which allegedly failed to stop at a Police check point.?The 24 year old was killed in the gunfire. According to the Police the vehicle was transporting sand without a permit. (Colombo Gazette)
