EC decides to count preference votes for Anura and Sajith

The Sri Lanka Election Commission has decided to count the preference votes for Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sajith Premadasa as neither candidate has secured more than 51% of the cumulative votes at the Presidential Election.

Election Commission Chairman R M A L Rathnayake said that Dissanayake and Premadasa have secured the most number of votes at the 2024 Presidential Election.

However, he said that as neither have secured more than 51% of the votes, the second preference vote will be counted from the ballots of the defeated candidates and added to these two candidates.

He said the new President will be picked from the candidate with the most number of votes after the cumulative votes and second or third preference votes are counted.

The Election Commission Chairman also said that the remaining candidates will not be considered for the preference vote as they are not among the top two contenders.

Dissanayake is leading in the cumulative votes and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya of Sajith Premadasa had already conceded defeat.

The National People’s Power (NPP) leader was heading for a clear win but his cumulative votes dropped when most of the votes were counted.

Dissanayake failed to secure a majority of the votes in the North and parts of Colombo.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya is of the opinion that even after counting the preference vote Premadasa is unlikely to win. (Colombo Gazette)

Another lockdown not ruled out
