Udayanga says SLPP will nominate Dhammika as Presidential candidate

Rajapaksa loyalist and former diplomat Udayanga Weeratunga says the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will nominate businessman Dhammika Perera as its Presidential candidate on Monday.

He also said that SLPP National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa will be nominated as the Prime Minister in an SLPP-led Government.

Sri Lanka will go to the polls to elect a new President on 21 September 2024, the Election Commission of Sri Lanka announced, Friday.

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka issued a Gazette notification stating that nominations for the polls will be accepted on 15th August 2024.

The term of the current President expires on November 17, 2024 and the election of the President must take place not less than one month and not more than two months before the expiration of the term of office of the President in office, as stipulated in Article 31 (3) of the Constitution.

Incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya Leader Sajith Premadasa, National Peoples Power Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka are among those contesting the polls. (Colombo Gazette)
