The Public Financial Management and Economic Transformation Bills were passed in Parliament Thursday (25) with amendments and without a vote.
Amendments were incorporated to the bills during the committee stage and subsequently, the third reading was passed without a vote.
These two bills were presented to Parliament on 22 May 2024.
State Minister of Finance, Shehan Semasinghe said that the implementation of these bills will ensure a sustainable economy and prevent the country from returning to a crisis.
He said the Economic Transformation Bill, in particular, ensures consistency and continuity of policies.
However, Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dr. Harsha de Silva said that his party did not support the Economic Transformation Bill because targets set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were included weeks before the Presidential election. (Colombo Gazette)
