Harin Fernando labels Wimal Weerawansa a dog

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando labelled MP Wimal Weerawansa a dog for being critical of his statement on India.

Fernando told Parliament that he does not want to spend time throwing stones at the dog but would rather throw bones for him to chew.

The Minister was responding to criticism from MP Wimal Weerawansa on Fernando saying that India was a part of Sri Lanka.

Fernando explained why he made that statement in India recently adding that his comments had been misinterpreted.

The Minister noted the importance of India’s historical relationship with Sri Lanka and the investments the country is now bringing in.

He recalled that whenever India helps Sri Lanka in a time of need India is praised, but when India attempts to invest in the country that is not welcomed.

Fernando asserted that he has no intention of “selling” Sri Lanka to India but added that Sri Lanka remains indebted to India for its support.?(Colombo Gazette)

Euro 19.35 million interest free soft loan from Austria

The Austrian Government will step up its assistance to Sri Lanka by providing (Euro 19.35 million) Rs 3546 million interest free soft loans to upgrade the Katunayaka Engineering Technology Institute and to obtain 100 ambulances for Government hospitals in the country. The loan facility provided through Raiffeisen Bank of Austria will set aside EUR 9.85 million to procure 100 ambulance cars for Government Hospitals and another 9.5 million Euro for Enhancing and Upgrading of Institute of Engineer

Rift in Government over proposal to liberalise shipping sector

A rift has emerged in the Government over the budget proposal to liberalise the shipping sector. Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told Parliament today that he was against the proposal and so was the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
