Over 750 prisoners freed to mark Sri Lanka’s independence

Over 750 prisoners were freed to mark Sri Lanka’s independence anniversary.

The prisons department said that inmates from prisons around the country were freed under a special pardon.

The prisoners who were freed were mostly those jailed for minor crimes and could not pay bail.

Sri Lanka celebrated its 76th National Independence Day today (Sunday) with the main event being held at Galle Face in Colombo with the participation of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin.

The parade highlighted the strength and magnanimity of the nation, featuring personnel from the Army, Navy, Air, Police, Civil Security Department and the National Cadet Corps.

The parade also featured combat vehicles from the three armed forces, with 22 retired officers and 29 disabled soldiers participating. The cultural parade added musical splendor to the event. (Colombo Gazette)

New phase of Southern Expressway declared open

Another phase of the Southern Expressway was opened to the public this morning. Accordingly, a 40km stretch of the expressway from Matara to Mattala and Hambantota was open for public use today. Furthermore, a section of the Outer Circular Road from Kadawatha to Kerawalapitiya is also to be declared open this evening. The newly opened expressway sections will be open for public use from midnight on 8 November.

Mahinda seeks pledge from Sajith to oppose federalism

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) leader and leader of the Opposition, Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought a pledge from New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa that he will oppose federalism and reject the draft constitution tabled in Parliament by the Prime Minister earlier this year. In a statement today Rajapaksa said that the chapter on constitutional reform in the manifesto of the UNP presidential candidate contains provisions to replace the unitary state with a formulation
