Resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as PM gazetted

The resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister has been gazetted.

The gazette noted that Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from the Office of Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka under article 47(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, with effect from May 09, 2022.

Rajapaksa tendered his resignation letter today.

His resignation came after his supporters attacked peaceful protesters at Galle Face.

In his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the outgoing Prime Minister said that he was resigning to make way for a new Cabinet to take over.

The current Cabinet stands dissolved with the resignation of the Prime Minister. (Colombo Gazette)

Attempt to smuggle sea cucumber to Sri Lanka busted

About 200 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered coral reef species, which was meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka was seized at Mandapam near?Rameswaram in India?and two youths were arrested in this connection, the Press Trust of India reported. Acting on a tip-off, Marine police personnel seized the dried sea cucumber stocked by two persons, with the intention to smuggle them to Sri Lanka, the Marine police said.
