Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament today following a secret vote.

He was elected to the post after the Parliament was split on who should be the new Deputy Speaker.

The SLFP had proposed Siyambalapitiya and the proposal was backed by the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

However, the?main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) proposed MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar to the post.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced a vote following which Siyambalapitiya received 148 votes and Bakeer Markar 65 votes.

Siyambalapitiya had resigned from the post last month. (Colombo Gazette)
