MPs to take forward talks to form all-party Government

A group of MPs who were among the independent MPs who met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today, have been picked to take forward talks to form an all-party Government.
The MPs are to have talks with the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and others to seek support for an all-party Government.
The President’s Office quoted the President as saying he will support the proposals put forward at discussions held today if all the political parties represented in Parliament give their backing.
The President today also invited all the political parties represented in Parliament to join the all-party Government, the President’s Office said.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena had said earlier today that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has agreed to replace Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Cabinet.
The President had given the assurance duringthe meeting held with the dissident ruling party MPs today.
Sirisena, the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), said that the all-party Cabinet will be picked by a National Executive Council which will consist of MPs from various political parties in Parliament.
Sirisena said that the President has also agreed to abolish the 20th Amendment to the Constitution and bring back the 19th Amendment with some changes.
He said that the amendments to the Constitution will reduce the powers of the President. (Colombo Gazette)
