Forty MPs from SLPP alliance sit in the opposition

Forty MPs from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led alliance sat in the opposition benches in Parliament today.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) leader Maithripala Sirisena told Parliament that they had decided to listen to the voice of the people and sit with the opposition.

He insisted that they are not going to be under the Opposition Leader but will remain as independent MPs.

Sirisena said that the appointment of a new Cabinet will not resolve the current crisis.

He noted that the demand from the public is for the entire Government to step down. (Colombo Gazette)

Earth tremor reported south of Panama

An earth tremor was reported off the coast of Panama in the Eastern Province today (19). The tremor had been recorded as magnitude 4.0 on the Richter Scale. The Seismic Data and Tsunami Alert Centre of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau of Sri Lanka (GSMB) said the tremor was reported this morning. The centre said the tremor was recorded 28 km off the south of Panama. It further revealed that the tremor was felt nearly 10 km deep in the sea. (Colombo Gazette)
