AG files 855 charges against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara

The Attorney General (AG) has filed 855 charges against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara over the Easter Sunday attacks.

The charges were read out before the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar today.

The AG had in May produced the charges in court in respect of those killed and injured in the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando had been accused of serious lapses and grave omissions to prevent the Easter Sunday bombings.

Hemasiri Fernando served as the Defence Secretary while Pujith Jayasundara was the Inspector General of Police at the time of the attacks.

The final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe the attacks implicated both Fernando and Jayasundara over the attacks.

They were accused of failing to prevent the attacks despite receiving intelligence information.

Fernando and Jayasundara were arrested in September 2019 in connection to investigations into the attacks.?(Colombo Gazette)

Sri Lanka formally conveys condolences on death of Prince Philip

Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena signed the Book of Condolence on the passing away of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip on behalf of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Government and the people of Sri Lanka at the ‘Westminster House’ in Colombo today. Dozens of Sri Lankan women wrongfully detained in Saudi Arabia for months

At least 41 Sri Lankan women, the majority of whom are migrant domestic workers, have spent months on end arbitrarily detained at a deportation center in Saudi Arabia, awaiting repatriation to their home country, Amnesty International revealed today.
