Missing crew member on ship near Sri Lanka reported dead

A missing crew member on a ship which caught fire near Sri Lanka, has been reported dead. The Navy said the Philippine crew member has reportedly died in an explosion on the ship. The Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard are currently working together to control the fire that erupted after an explosion of a boiler in the main engine room of MT New Diamond, an oil tanker sailing 38 nautical miles off Sangamankanda Point east

Parliament official arrested for soliciting bribe to clear food

A Parliament official has been arrested for soliciting a bribe to clear food supplies. The Bribery Commission said the official had solicited the bribe to give clearance for fruits supplied to Parliament. The official had sought a Rs. 60,000 bribe from a supplier to ensure fruits supplied to Parliament are not rejected as unfit for human consumption. The official was arrested while accepting the bribe. Further investigations are underway. (Colombo Gazette)

Additional Prosecutors assigned to four High Courts

Additional Prosecutors have been assigned to four High Courts, the Attorney General’s Department said today. Attorney General Dappula de Livera assigned the Additional Prosecutors to the High Courts in Homagama, Kalutara, Matara, and Negombo. State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, the Coordinating Officer of the Attorney General said the Additional Prosecutors were assigned as there are a number of pending cases in these courts. She said that over 600 cases are pending in each of these High Courts.
