Temporary permits for sand mining in Kalu Ganga

The Ministry of Environment has decided to reissue temporary permits for sand mining in the Kalu Ganga.

Issuing a circular, the Ministry said the decision was taken during a meeting with subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday (3).

The Ministry said the temporary permits to be reissued will contain certain conditions.

Three months after issuing the permit, the Ministry will conduct inspections of the sand and an environmental assessment of the Kalu Ganga.

The Ministry further said if it receives reports of seawater mixing with the river, then steps will be taken to immediately suspend the sand mining permits. (Colombo Gazette)

A?Sri Lankan passenger was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport today with?wallapatta?hidden in his baggage. The 38 year old man was arrested at the departure lounge with?32 kgs of wallapatta chips, valued at Rs. 9,600,000.00, concealed in his baggage.
