Sri Lankans stranded in Kuwait appeal to President

A group of Sri Lankans stranded in Kuwait have appealed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to bring them back as soon as possible.

The Sri Lankans, in a video message, said that they have very little food and water and are now in a desperate situation.

Just last week the Foreign Ministry said that the Kuwaiti Government had offered to fly Sri Lankan migrant workers back.

Foreign Secretary Ravinatha Aryasinha said that Foreign Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, having received Cabinet sanction, is going to engage with his Kuwaiti counterpart and will be discussing a process by which Sri Lanka can respect an amnesty offer.

The Sri Lankans appearing on the video sent to Colombo Gazette said that they cannot wait any longer and need to return soon.

They said that while they had entered Kuwait illegally they are prepared to face the consequences back home as they have been offered amnesty by the Kuwait authorities. (Colombo Gazette)

Elections Commission says 35 candidates to contest polls

A record 35 candidates handed in their nomination papers on Monday to contest the Presidential election next month. The Elections Commission announced that 35 candidates have been approved to contest the Presidential election on 16 November. Objection made against two candidates rejected

The National Elections Commission today rejected objections placed against the nomination of two candidates. National Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said that the objections had been made within the stipulated time today. Deshapriya said that after considering the objections the National Elections Commission had decided that the objections were not valid so the objections were dismissed.
