More Navy officers infected

Eleven more patients infected with COVID-19 were detected in Sri Lanka overnight.

The Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasighe said all 11 patients were identified as Navy personnel at the Navy Camp in Welisara.

This raises the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka to 835.

Dr. Jasinghe said among the confirmed patients, 586 patients are reported as active cases.

Meanwhile 135 persons are admitted to various hospitals on suspicion of having contracted the virus.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe further said that 240 patients, including a Chinese woman, have completely recovered so far and have been discharged from hospital.

Nine deaths due to COVID-19 have so far been reported in Sri Lanka, he added. (Colombo Gazette)

Two policemen injured in Akuressa shooting

Two policemen were injured after being shot at in Akuressa early this morning. According to the Police, gunmen on a motorcycle had shot at the policemen when they were ordered to stop. The policemen had ordered the motorcycle to stop to be checked when one man on the motorcycle opened fire. The two policemen were injured and admitted to hospital.

Over 40 Indians employed at Colombo construction site arrested

Over 40 Indians employed at a construction site in Colombo have been arrested. The Immigration and Emigration Department said that 44 Indians were arrested while they were employed at the construction site. The Indians had been in Sri Lanka on a tourist visa but had been working at the construction site in Slave Island in Colombo when they were arrested.
