Education Minister rejects statements by Bandula

The Suraksha Insurance scheme for school children has not been suspended, The Ministry of Education said.

Co-cabinet spokesman, Minister Bandula Gunawardana had said yesterday that the insurance scheme offered to students had been suspended.

However, Minister of Education Dullas Alahapperuma said that the scheme had not been suspended.

Gunawardana had said that a decision was taken to launch an investigation over allegations around the insurance scheme and the computer tablet program.

He said that since an investigation had been launched, both schemes have been suspended.

The Suraksha health insurance scheme was introduced by former Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

However there were reports of financial irregularities in the scheme while the issuing of tabs was also surrounded by controversy. (Colombo Gazette)

Soldier injured as train rams into military truck

A soldier was?injured when a Colombo bound train crashed into a military truck in Chavakachcheri today. The police said the truck had attempted to cross the railway track when the train crashed into it. Reports from the area said that four soldiers were in the truck when the accident occurred. The four soldiers had managed to jump off the truck when they saw the train and in the process one soldier suffered injuries and was admitted to hospital. (Colombo Gazette)
