Several UNP MPs threaten to form new party

The United National Party (UNP) is facing a split over the leadership post with several members demanding that former UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa be appointed party leader.

UNP Parliamentarian Harin Fernando said that if there is no change in the party leadership they will form a new party.

Fernando said that even Premadasa has said that he will not continue in politics if the UNP fails to make drastic changes to the leadership posts.

He said that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe must not attempt to remain party leader or look to be opposition leader.

Instead, Fernando says Wickremesinghe must give way for a new leader in the UNP, failing which some UNP MPs will look at an alternative solution.
