President tells diplomats free, fair elections a good sign

President Maithripala Sirisena told new foreign envoys who presented their credentials today that the current free, fair and peaceful Presidential election campaign in Sri Lanka reflects the strength of democracy in Sri Lanka.

He said that this great democratic characteristic was restored due to broad political transformation that had taken place in the country, the President’s office said.

President Sirisena expressed these views after accepting credentials from three new envoys appointed to Sri Lanka at the President’s House in Colombo today.

Rabie Narsh presented his credentials as the Ambassador of the Lebanese Republic, Maj Gen Chris Eze presented his credentials as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Denis Chaibi presented his credentials as the Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tilak Marapana and Cabinet Secretary Sumith Abeysinghe and Additional Secretary Esala Weerakoon were also present on this occasion.
