Government schools closed on 15th due to elections

All Government schools in the island will be closed on 15 November in view of the Presidential Election the following day, the Government announced today.

The Ministry of Education announced that all Government schools would be closed on Friday (15) in lieu of the election on Saturday (16).

Several Government schools will be used for election related work on the day of the election.

Tight security is expected to be in place for the election in which 35 candidates are contesting.

The final results of the election is expected on 18 November.

Sea cucumber being smuggled to Sri Lanka seized

About 200 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered species, worth about Indian Rs 50 lakh and meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, was seized by marine police from a boat off Mandapam in Rameswaram, the Press Trust of India reported. Three of the five persons in the boat were arrested, while two managed to escape, police said. A hunt was on to nab them, they said.
