Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga (CBK) says she was only a guest at an event held recently where several political parties, including the United National Party signed agreements to form a new alliance to support New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa.
She said that she attended the event last week on an invitation extended by the UNP.
In a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena the former President noted that even he, as leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), had attended events of other political parties.
Kumaratunga said that her actions have in no way harmed the SLFP.
She also said that the SLFP had decided to back Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the 16 November election without informing her, despite she being a senior member of the party.
The former President also noted that no action had been taken against Mahinda Rajapaksa when he left the SLFP and joined the SLPP. (Colombo Gazette)
