Mangala complains against TV Channel

Minister of Finance, Mangala Samaraweera, has lodged a complaint at the Elections Commission against a private TV channel for distorting a statement made by former Minister A H M Fowzie.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Elections Commission, Minister Samaraweera says that the TV channel in concern had claimed that former Minister Fowzie had called for the assassination of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The letter further clarifies that former Minister Fowzie never made any such statement during his speech at a rally held in Colombo and that the former Minister had only called for the defeat of Rajapaksa at the polls as a means of safeguarding the future of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Minister Samaraweera in his letter has pointed out that the TV channel in concern is attempting to incite communal unrest and has called on the Elections Commission to take appropriate action.
