The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The agreement was signed between SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera and Rajapaksa.
The SLFP had recently also signed a separate agreement with the SLPP.
Speaking at the event Jayasekera said that there was a growing call for a Presidential candidate who is not a politician to be nominated as the public had lost trust in politicians.
He said that former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the ideal candidate.
Jayasekera said that while there was criticism that the SLFP took too long to decide on who it will back at the Presidential election in November, the party feels it took the rights decision at the right time.
He said that the SLFP ensured there was no division in the party with regards to who it supports at the election.
Jayasekera said that the steps taken by SLFP leader, President Maithripala Sirisena to address several issues over the past few years have been recognised in the MoU.
Speaking at the event, Gotabaya Rajapaksa assured that he will not let down those who placed their faith on him.
He also assured that the identity of the SLFP will not be harmed in any way.
Rajapaksa SLFP members who had second thoughts of backing him at the election to reconsider and have faith in him.
