The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding today on working together at the upcoming Presidential election.
The agreement was signed by the General Secretary of the SLFP Dayasiri Jayasekera and the General Secretary of the SLPP Sagara Kariyawasam at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI).
Several members of the SLFP and the SLPP were present at the event.
However the leaders of both parties, President Maithripala Sirisena and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa did not attend.
The agreement will see the SLFP backing SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential election.
Speaking at the event held to mark the signing of the MoU, Dayasiri Jayasekera said that the SLFP and SLPP will now work together based on the MoU.
He recalled that the SLFP split into two groups after 2015 but both sides were now able to unite with a common goal in mind.
SLPP National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa said that SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and SLFP leader Maithripala Sirisena were determined to unite the SLPP and SLFP.
He said that even the supporters of both parties wanted to see the SLFP and SLPP work together.
