Former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan today noted that the next President of Sri Lankan must be an experienced politician.
Speaking at the Viyathmaga Annual Convention 2019, at the Shangri – La Hotel in Colombo today, Muralitharan said that cricketers and other professionals cannot lead the country.
Viyathmaga was launched by professionals who support former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Rajapaksa has been named as the Presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
Muralitharan said that some people in Sri Lanka place their faith in businessmen and others but a President can only be someone who has experience in politics to take political decisions.
The former cricketer urged the public to vote for a President who had already made a mark in Sri Lanka, who will protect the people and lead by example.
He said that a true leader must lead by setting an example and not lead just by words.
Muralitharan noted that some leaders say they will die for the country. He says there is no point if they die. What is required is for them to rule the country.
He also spoke about the war and the sacrifices made to end the war.
Muralitharan said that the LTTE had a choice when peace talks took place but instead they killed innocent people.
He said that the greatest day in his life was in 2009 when the war ended.
