Several dead, over 50 injured in Waskaduwa accident

Several people were killed and over 50 others sustained injuries following an accident in Waskaduwa today. The Police said that two passenger buses had crashed into each other killing at least six passengers and injuring over 50 others. According to the Police, three women were among those killed. Video footage after the accident showed area residents attempting to remove the dead and injured from the buses.

New Governors appointed for South, Central and Uva Provinces

President Maithripala Sirisena appointed three new Governors for the South, Central and Uva Provinces. The new Governors took oaths before President Maithripala Sirisena today. Maithri Gunaratne who resigned last week as the Central Province Governor was today appointed as the Uva Province Governor. Hambantota Mayor sentenced to 5 years in jail

Hambantota Mayor Eraj Ravindra Fernando has been sentenced to five years in jail for threatening several United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarians with a pistol. The incident occurred in 2014 when the UNP MPs had conducted an inspection tour of the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port. The Hambantota High Court sentenced Fernando to jail today over the case.
