Supreme Court dismisses five petitions in support of Bill against death penalty

The Supreme Court today dismissed five petitions filed in support of a Private Member’s Bill submitted in Parliament against the death penalty.

United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Bandula Lal Bandarigoda had submitted the Private Member’s Bill seeking to abolish the death penalty.

The five petitions sought and order to declare the Bill legal.

However, the Supreme Court dismissed the petitions.

President Maithripala Sirisena said recently that he had been told that the Bill against the death penalty is not legal.

The President said that the Attorney General had informed him that the private member’s Bill submitted to Parliament was not legal.
