Supreme Court dismisses five petitions in support of Bill against death penalty

The Supreme Court today dismissed five petitions filed in support of a Private Member?s Bill submitted in Parliament against the death penalty. United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Bandula Lal Bandarigoda had submitted the Private Member?s Bill seeking to abolish the death penalty. Gamini Senarath acquitted in case over misappropriation of funds

Former President?s chief of staff Gamini Senarath and two others were today acquitted and released by the Permanent High Court-at-Bar in the case over the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to state owned Litro Gas. The Senarath and the others were accused of misappropriating Rs 500 million in funds belonging to Litro Gas. However the Permanent High Court-at-Bar ruled that the allegations had not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

NPC now approves transfer of Kurunegala DIG

The National Police Commission (NPC) has approved the transfer of Kurunegala Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kithsiri Jayalath to Trincomalee.
