President briefs UN chief on decision to execute convicts

President Maithripala Sirisena has briefed UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the decision to execute four convicts.

The President said that he spoke to the UN Secretary General over the phone last night and discussed concerns raised over the move.

The President said that he has decided to implement the death penalty on convicts jailed over drug related charges in the best interest of the country.

President Maithripala Sirisena had said this week that four convicts on death row will be executed soon.

He had told media heads that he has signed the papers to execute the four convicts who have been sentenced to death on drug related offences.

While the President has confirmed signing the death warrants, no names have been revealed and no details have been shared about any scheduled executions or information on the cases. (Colombo Gazette)

Hotels to be converted into treatment facilities
