Speaker hits back at President on PSC

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has hit back at President Maithripala Sirisena with regards to the Parliament Select Committee (PSC).

Jayasuriya said that any official summoned by the PSC must respect the summons or will need to face the consequences.

The Speaker said that while the Parliament will not look to challenge the powers of the President, being critical of the PSC will not be helpful.

President Maithripala Sirisena had said last week that he cannot approve the PSC grilling security officials.

At a meeting with Senior Ranks of Sri Lanka Police today the President said the Attorney General had informed him, there are five cases on the 04/21 attacks before the Supreme Court and appointing a PSC at such a time sets a negative impact on the process undertaken by the Supreme Court.

The PSC on the Easter Sunday attacks has been meeting over the past few days.

Startling revelations have been made during the sittings with the President being found at fault over the Easter Sunday attacks by some of the officials questioned.

Among the officials questioned so far are the Defence Secretary, intelligence chief, Police chief and former Defence Secretary.

The President said that those who have appeared before the PSC so far are former officers or officials and not current officers.

He said that he will not allow any current officer to be summoned before the PSC and that his stand has been communicated to the cabinet.

The President also said that he has been informed by the Attorney General that the PSC proceedings will hamper ongoing cases filed on the Easter Sunday attacks.

He said that he had sent the concerns raised by the AG to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to inform Parliament.

However he said that the Speaker had not read out his statement to Parliament. (Colombo Gazette)
