SLMC backs holding elections under old system

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) backs holding the Local Government (LG) elections under the old system. SLMC leader and Minister?Rauff Hakeem told Parliament today that if issues over the new system cannot be resolved then the SLMC has no issue with the LG elections being held under the old system. “If we are unable to correct the anomalies in the present system there is enough room to revert back to the earlier system,” he said. Queenstown rallies in support of family facing deportation to Sri Lanka

The people of Queenstown showed their compassion as they took to the streets in support of a family facing deportation to Sri Lanka, the Stuff website reported. After eight years in New Zealand Dinesha Amarasinghe, her husband Sam Wijerathne and their three sons have been told they are to be deported to their birth country?as Dinesha,?the primary visa holder, was?diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years ago. A humanitarian appeal has been lodged but the family’s future remains uncertain.

Concerns raised over queues outside diplomatic missions

Concerns were raised in Parliament today over queues of Sri Lankans standing outside some diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka. Deputy Minister of Finance and Mass Media?Lasantha Alagiyawanna said that Sri Lankans can be seen standing in?queues on the pavement to apply for a visa outside most diplomatic missions in the country.
