Cabinet has approved a proposal to reduce the use of electricity for three months in order to address the electricity crisis in the country.
Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake had submitted the proposal as a temporary measure to address the serious electricity crisis in the country.
Under the proposal residents will be advised to switch off at least two bulbs every day for three months.
Business establishments, places of worship and state institutions will be advised to reduce electricity consumption by 10 percent.
Street lights in some areas will also be switched off while all street lights will be switched off an hour ahead of the usual times.
The Power and Energy Ministry says the Ceylon Electricity Board is unable to meet the electricity demand in the country as hydropower has dropped with little or no rain in the catchment areas. (Colombo Gazette)
