Period to hand over illegal swords, kris knives extended

The time period announced by the Police to hand over illegal swords and kris knives has been extended by two days. The Police had earlier requested the public to hand over illegal swords and kris knives over the weekend to the nearest Police station. However, today the Police announced that a further 48 hours has been given for the public to hand over illegal swords and kris knives. Raids were carried out following the Easter Sunday attacks to seize swords and kris knives.

Temporary restrictions on social media lifted

The temporary restrictions imposed on access to some social media websites has been lifted. The restrictions were imposed last night after violence broke out in Negombo. The authorities restricted access to the social media websites after videos and images related to the Negombo incident had been circulating. Access to Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber and YouTube had been restricted. This was the second time access was restricted following the Easter Sunday attacks.

Sri Lanka expels 200 Islamic clerics

Sri Lanka has expelled over 600 foreign nationals, including around 200 Islamic clerics, since the Easter suicide bombings blamed on a local terrorist group, a minister said on Sunday (May 5).
