The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will begin formal talks this week.
The talks set to begin tomorrow (14th) will focus on forming a new alliance.
SLPP member and former Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that the talks will be held with an open mind.
Informal talks had taken place over the past few weeks including between President Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Basil Rajapaksa said that the next Presidential candidate of the SLPP will be decided by the party.
Basil Rajapaksa said that the SLPP feels Mahinda Rajapaksa must be the next Presidential candidate.
However, since Mahinda Rajapaksa cannot contest because of the restrictions imposed through the 19th Amendment the SLPP will back anyone proposed by Mahinda Rajapaksa. (Colombo Gazette)
