Security forces launch all out war on drugs

The security forces today announced the launch of an all out war on drugs.

The commanders of the tri-forces and the Chief of Defence Staff announced the launch of the operation at a joint press conference.

Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne said that legal options are being looked into to give authority to the tri-forces to arrest suspects involved in drugs smuggling.

Commander of the Arm Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake said that once legal provisions are given the Army will apprehend peddlers of narcotics, distributors and addicts.

He said the joint military operation is similar to the operation carried out during the war to defeat the LTTE.

Sri Lankan baby farms: Minister admits illegal adoption trade

Sri Lankan authorities have admitted in a Dutch documentary that thousands of babies born there were fraudulently sold for adoption abroad in the 1980s, the BBC reported. Up to 11,000 children could have been sold to Europe, with both parties being given fake documents. Some were reportedly born into “baby farms” that sold children to the west. Sri Lanka’s health minister told the Dutch current affairs programme Zembla he would set up a DNA database to help children find their birth mothers.

Provincial Council Elections Amendment Bill passed with majority

The?Provincial Council Elections Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament by a majority today. The Bill was passed during the third reading by a 2/3rd majority, with 159 votes for and 37 against it. Earlier the Attorney General had informed Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that the Bill will require a 2/3rd majority in Parliament to be approved.
