Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorala today defended the actions of prison guards at the Angunakolapelessa prison over an assault incident.
The Minister told Parliament that the prison guards had acted within their rights in order to control a situation which arose in the prison.
The Minister was responding to a question raised in Parliament today by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.
Athukorala said that some prisoners had acted in an unruly manner and so the prison guards had to control the situation.
The Minister said that the prison guards had been attacked when they attempted to stop a prisoner from being assaulted by another prisoner.
She claimed that the prison guards had then used the authority they had to bring the situation under control. The Minister noted that no one was shot or injured in the incident.
The Minister also said that disciplinary action will be taken on the CCTV footage of the incident being leaked to the media.
A leaked video had revealed the incident at the Angunakolapelessa prison where several inmates had been lined up and assaulted by prison guards.
The Committee for Protecting Prisoners’ Rights released the video at a media conference last month.
The Committee for Protecting Prisoners’ Rights said that the assault, which took place in November last year, had taken place following a protest staged by the inmates. (Colombo Gazette)
