Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today defended the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) after President Maithripala Sirisena had raised some concerns about the Commission yesterday.
President Sirisena had, in Parliament yesterday, slammed the Constitutional Council (CC) headed by the Speaker over some appointments it made.
The President also slammed the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka for questioning his decision to deploy the Special Task Force to the Angunakolapelessa prison.
However Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said the HRCSL was working within its mandate and had only sought a clarification on the decision taken by the Ministry of Defence and Law and Order which comes under the President.
The Speaker said that the Commission has been recognized by the international community for its excellent work.
“Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has been acclaimed by the United Nations as an esteemed independent commission,” the Speaker said.
The main opposition, however refused to accept the statement made by the Speaker and this resulted in a heated debate in Parliament today.
The Speaker later suspended Parliament for 10 minutes. (Colombo Gazette)
