The Government today assured it will assist Sri Lankan refugees returning from India to resettle in the country.
The Prime Minister’s office said that a group of 83 refugees returned yesterday with the assistance of the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s office said that the refugees had returned after the Government issued an open invitation for the refugees to come back.
The statement said that the Government remains committed to ensure National unity and reconciliation among all communities.
The Prime Minister’s office said that 11,020 Sri Lankans have returned from Tamil Nadu since 2009 and another 3815 are ready to return.
The UNHCR provides the air ticket and other assistance for the refugees while the Government says it will provide financial and other forms of assistance for six months. (Colombo Gazette)
