US, Sri Lanka hold key talks in Washington

The United States and Sri Lanka had key talks in Washington focused on the developments in Sri Lanka following the political crisis.

A delegation led by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera had talks with Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alice Wells and Johnathan Nash, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Millennium Challenge Corporation.

“Had a productive meeting with Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alice Wells and US Ambassador to Alaina Tiplitz with . Spoke of greater cooperation on development, security and regional affairs. Very positive,” Minister of Economic Reform and Public Distribution Dr. Harsha de Silva tweeted.

He said the Sri Lankan delegation also had talks with the Millennium Challenge Corporation on the USD 480m grant.

“Met Johnathan Nash COO of Millennium Challenge Corporation with and ST to discuss the USD 480m compact (grant, not loan) that was ‘paused’ with the coup. What a shame! We were to sign on 17 December. Hopefully we can get it back soon for transport infrastructure,” Dr. Harsha de Silva tweeted. (Colombo Gazette)
