Sri Lanka briefs visiting EU Parliamentarians

Sri Lanka briefed visiting EU Parliament members on the latest developments in the country.

Two European Union Parliamentary Members, Lord William Dartmouth and Geoffrey Van Orden, who are in Sri Lanka as members of the ?Friends of Sri Lanka Group?, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera,??at the latter?s office.

During the call both the parties exchanged views on matters of mutual interests and??agreed to enhance bilateral trade and tourism cooperation, maximizing the benefits for Sri Lanka under the EU?s GSP+ facility.

Malik Samarawickrema, Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunge, Secretary to the Treasury and Ministry of Finance and Mass Media and? Mano Tittawella, Senior Adviser to Finance Minister were also present.

The EU Parliamentarians also met the Tamil National Alliance during the visit. (Colombo Gazette)

Fire breaks out in Kurunegala

A fire broke out in the Yanthampalawa area in Kurunegala this evening. The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) said a Bell 212 helicopter has been deployed to douse the fire. The helicopter is carrying out bambi bucket operations to extinguish the flames. The cause for the fire is yet to be ascertained. (Colombo Gazette)

Inmates involved in crimes to be transferred to Boosa

By Indika Sri Aravinda Measures have been taken to transfer a group of prisoners imprisoned on charges of organized crimes to a separate unit at the Boosa Detention Camp, the Commissioner General of Prisons T. M. J. W. Tennakoon said. He said the prisoners are to be transferred as it was found out that they were actively involved in operating crimes from within the prison.
